Construction is set to begin this month on a US$15.7 million bridge over the Cavalla River connecting Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire, funded by ECOWAS and built by China's Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group.

Construction work is set to begin this month on a new bridge over the Cavalla (Cavally) River connecting Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire, according to an announcement from the ECOWAS Commission. The project is valued at approximately US$15.7 million and is being funded by the Economic Community of West African States.

The bridge will be built by China's Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group. The Cavalla River forms a stretch of the border between the two countries, and crossing points along it, such as the one near Taï on the Ivorian side, currently rely on informal river crossings rather than permanent infrastructure.

A permanent bridge crossing is expected to ease the movement of people, goods and vehicles between southeastern Liberia and western Côte d'Ivoire, supporting cross-border trade in a region where communities on both sides of the river maintain close economic and family ties. The project fits into a broader pattern of ECOWAS-backed infrastructure investment aimed at improving regional connectivity across West Africa.

Further details on the bridge's exact location, expected completion date and construction timeline were not available at the time of this report. Liberia Today will provide updates as construction progresses and more details become available from Liberian and Ivorian authorities.
