Thomas Kesselly, an officer with the Liberia Immigration Service, was shot at the LIS Academy in Foya on September 3 - but authorities have given no official account, and his family disputes claims the shooting was self-inflicted.

Thomas Kesselly, an officer with the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), was reportedly shot on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the LIS Academy in Foya, Lofa County. As of this report, authorities have not issued an official account of what happened.

Conflicting versions of the incident have circulated: one account says Kesselly was shot by another person, while a competing version claims the shooting was self-inflicted. Kesselly's family has publicly expressed doubt about the self-inflicted account and is seeking a clear explanation from authorities.

Neither the Liberia Immigration Service nor the Liberia National Police had issued a public statement on the shooting or on Kesselly's medical condition at the time of this report. Foya, on Liberia's border with Guinea and Sierra Leone, has also been the site of unrelated cross-border security tensions with Guinean forces earlier this year.

Liberia Today will update this report as more information becomes available.
