Maryland County has kicked off preliminary selection matches for the National County Sports Meet, scouting players through district-level competitions in Barrobo, Karluway, Harper, and Pleebo rather than relying on Monrovia-based talent.

Maryland County officially launched preliminary selection matches for this year's National County Sports Meet on September 2 at the Martha Tubman Sports Stadium in Harper. Rather than drawing on Monrovia-based players as some counties do, Maryland is running decentralized district-level competitions across Barrobo, Karluway, Harper, and Pleebo to identify its final squad from local talent.

Maryland Sports Association Committee chairman Gabriel Tarpeh explained the strategy behind the district-by-district approach: "The essence of us going into the other districts is to make sure that we scout our own players and prioritize them." City officials backed the push publicly, with Harper Mayor Abraham Jackson arguing that Maryland has football talent that matches players from the capital if given proper exposure, and Pleebo Mayor Larry Geekor adding, "We have a lot of resources in the county, and we have talented players. What matters is unity."

The selection process is expected to run for about a month before organizers settle on a final 25-player roster, which will then enter camp ahead of the national competition. Local government has already begun backing the effort financially: the county administration provided an initial US$1,000, Harper City Corporation contributed LD 150,000, and Representative P. Mike Jury pledged a further LD 50,000 toward preparations.

The County Sports Meet is one of Liberia's most closely watched grassroots sporting events, with counties competing for bragging rights as much as silverware. Maryland's bet on homegrown players over recruited outside talent will be tested once the preliminary rounds narrow the field and the county's camp begins ahead of the national rounds.
